There were two games in the NBA today involving Australians.
Dante Exum, Joe Ingles and the Utah Jazz traveled to Memphis to take on the Grizzlies. In a defensively minded game, the Jazz came up with the win 82-73
Patty Mills and the San Antonio Spurs hosted the New Orleans Pelicans. The Spurs came up with the win 112-100.
Exum started again in place of the injured George Hill, but only playing short game time again. Exum only played 14 minutes in this contest, once again racking up four fouls in quick time. In this time, Exum did not score, going 0-of-3 from the field, including missing both his three point attempts.
Exum did have two rebounds and three assists but unfortunately committed three turnovers as well. Unfortunately it was this sort of game for the shooters, Rodney Hood went 5-of-16 and Gordon Hayward went 5-of-13. For Memphis Mike Conley was worse with 3–of-16.
Ingles had a rare game tonight. He struggled. He played 13 minutes and shot the ball once, a three that he missed. The only other stat for the night that Ingles collected was a single foul. If you are going to have an off game offensively, then the night where your team scores 82 and still wins by nine is probably the night to do it.
Mills was the best performing Australian on the day. He played 19 minutes and scored 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting. He even went 2-of-4 from deep and a perfect 3-of-3 from the line. Mills collected three rebounds and in a game that San Antonio seemed to moved the ball well he game an equal game high seven assists. Mills had one steal and only two turnovers.
This was another rare game, the Spurs starters have been struggling and the second unit has been getting them out of a hole. Tonight the starters had plus/minuses of more than plus 16 and most of the second unit had minuses. Mils himself was minus three on the night. When the starters do well, the second units job is to keep the momentum which is what they did.
