Basketball never stops. The WNBA preseason kicked off today.
In the opening game of the NBA preseason, the Erin Phillips and the Dallas Wings traveled to San Antonio to take on the Stars and their number one draft pick, Kelsey Plum. Unfortunately for Phillips and the Wings, Plum had a good start to her professional career, helping the Stars to a 87-81 win.
Plum did struggle a little with her shot, that had to be the nerves of her first WNBA action. Plum top scored for the game with 19 points on 5-of 13 shooting, going 2-of-9 from deep. Plum went 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
She also had five assists and two steals in a good solid work out. What impressed me about Plum was the effort she put in when she was off ball. She also got players into better positions with her passing and had a number of hockey assists.
From an Australian point of view, Erin Phillips did struggle for the Stars. She went 0-of-4 from the field, missing both her shots from deep. However, Phillips tends to find a way to score, making her way to the free throw line for seven attempts. She hit six of them. In what continued to be a poor showing her four assists were almost offset by the three turnovers that she committed.
The next games in the WNBA preseason are on the 2nd of May with action starting in the regular season on the 13th of May. I look forward to bringing you all the Australian action of the league and any other interesting tidbits along the way.
